New York Swing Dance Society

Picture
The NYSDS, from the Cat Club to the Village Gate, Irving Plaza, Croatian Hall and St Jeans, became a center for all dancers. NYSDS, a non-profit in its 27th year, is dedicated to Swing Dancing and live Big Band music. Margaret Batiuchok, danceMB.com,  the volunteer board member, who has hired all the bands since NYSDS’s start, has also been president since 1996.

The New York Swing Dance Society (the Cat Club its 1st home) was founded in 1985 by Margaret Batiuchok and 10 friends when there was no organized swing dancing in New York. The NYSDS is the group most responsible for the resurgence of Swing dance in New York when few in the general public knew what swing was. The NYSDS became a mecca for all generations, races, and level of dancers, and the weekly dances consistently drew 300-500 dancers. It is where Sylvia, Ryan, Steve Mitchell and others, met and Lindy hopped with Margaret and masters such as Al Leagens, Frankie Manning, George Lloyd, Charlie Meade and Buster Brown. Run by volunteers, in its 27th year, the NYSDS provides live orchestras, DJs during the breaks, lessons before, and dance performances of all styles of dance plus of course great swing and tap.
